bush or president barack obama, the truth is, at the time they were elected president, we as a nation, overall, got the president we deserved at that time. now, one of the most impressive speeches i've ever heard was given by senator barack obama at the democratic convention, and i love the way he talked about america coming back as one america. not a red america or blue america but america. just one country. and it's one of the things that i drew great hope from on 9/12 delsh 2001 as people of the country -- on 9/12/2001 as people of the country gathered around, as we did in our east texas town, and we all held hands and we sang hymns and patriotic songs and you look -- i look around the circle and was deeply moved because i knew that day there were no hyphenated americans. there were just americans. and we were together. and everybody standing there in that square holding hands, we shared the love for our country. we wanted to see it strong. we wanted to see it recover from that devastating blow from people intent on evil based on hatred. well, that senator that wanted one america h

my father would have been coming in 2008, would have been so proud to see barack obama elected in north carolina, to see the state go for barack obama. sadly, it was not to happen again in 2012, although we worked hard at it. anyway, my first campaign that i actually was involved with was mcgovern in 1972. i think my wife kim has the bumper sticker that says "don't blame me, i'm from massachusetts." i think massachusetts was the only state to go for mcgovern, sadly. kim also took a year off between high-school and college and a ring doorbells and called people up for that at the field office in upstate new york. i worked with carol king and barbra streisand. we did a couple of concerts. it was 3/4 mcgovern as a time signature, me, and carol, and a barbara streisand. in the years since then, i have gotten involved with a number of people in massachusetts, gary studds, ted kennedy, i worked on his campaign, i worked for elizabeth warren this pastime. i have written it down, if i could find it. i worked for dukakis and mondale and core and carry -- gore and kerry, a long list, clinton and
